Our self-focus compromises our approach to God

We don't come to God reverently (5:1)

We're not thoughtful about the things we say (5:2a)

We forget our place as creatures (5:2b)

We make vows (promises) we don't really intend to keep (5:4)

Then, to get out of it, we say making the vow was a "mistake" (5:6)

What we should do is really, truly listen (5:1-2)

We can focus on helping, comforting and defending others because Christ is focused on helping, comforting and defending us.
